What Are Your Restorers?

What restores you? What brings you back to wholeness when you are utterly depleted?

The romance of stargazing from the porch on balmy evening

Your restorers are simple things, soothing things. They are things that rebuild your tired body and mend your soul. They are gentle healing touchstones that resuscitate your inner life. They say that ‘desperate times call for desperate measures’, which makes it easy to reach for the destructive things that could send you further down a spiral of negativity. But, do you know how to reach out for the things that restore your balance or refuel your inner juices instead?

What do you turn to at the end of a long day?

A hug

A heartfelt conversation with a friend
A healing crystal

Dancing to your favourite song

A vase of flowers on your night stand
Beautiful soft cotton linen
Lavender under your pillow

The more I explore conversations with women around self-love, self-care and depletion (especially during times of extreme emotional turmoil), the more I see how we don’t create space for the sacred ceremony of restoration. Instead, we wait until we reach the messy edge of quiet desperation, a place that all too familiar. A sentiment constantly reinforced is that there are so many things that demand our energy. We are the givers, lending our hands and hearts to those who need us. We are the hard workers, pouring everything we have into the beauty we wish to create. We lose ourselves in the process. We forget to nurture ourselves back to fullness and so we run dry. But why should it take takes reaching breaking point to heed your soul’s call or for you to remember to breathe easy, be gentle, nurture and restore so that the chambers of your heart fill up with the energy, light and inspiration your need to keep going?

If there is one profound lesson that reaching back to life from the edge of burnout, of dealing with lost pregnancies and those taxing moments midst of my fertility journey has taught me, it’s that  – I need to be my own nurturer. Sometimes, it’s harder to choose what serves my well-being over what will cause more harm, because those bumps in the road can become excuses for all the wrong things (overindulging in sugar, not exercising, not meditating, relinquishing important commitments, etc). This understanding inspires me keep asking questions about how I allow moments for restoration daily in order to nurture my well-being and where I can integrate self-care rituals so that they become a natural part of my life that continues to raise my vibration or keep me both spiritually and emotionally grounded.

I’ve found these two questions are powerful anchors that guide me back to myself and I encourage you to explore them for yourself too:

What is the most healing or nurturing thing I can do for myself right now? and What restores me?

Take stock of whatever your restorers are. Remember them, write them down and keep them close to your heart. Make room for them at the end of each day. They will serve you. They will heal you. They bring you back to life when you are on the brink of falling apart. And if you do fall apart, because sometimes you need to, they are the balm that will piece your fragmented soul back together.


How Are You Working Your Light?

Plants are ancient healers. They came into being with a mission, a purpose – that is to thrive as a unique but still sacred expression of divinity, as well as heal and restore wholeness in us.

I imagine that when their seeds first fell upon the flesh of Mother Earth and they began to grow where she breathed love into them, this calling in their hearts was their compass as they prepared to journey towards the light.  And they got to work without hesitation, growing, channelling light and life-force energy from the Divine, from the Earth, from the sun, from within and transformed that energy into consciousness, healing and so many other gifts. Each has its unique properties and offerings – medicine, beauty and sometimes merely the therapy of their presence. We take this understated intelligence for granted.

Healing plants are light-workers centred in the knowing that we are each embodiments of loving light who are connected to a greater spiritual essence.

Working intuitively with plant allies has helped me see how much they have to teach about how to stay in a state of flow, how to choose the path of least resistance, how to surrender, how to honour the Great Mother and how to be of service. When I bare witnesses to the way that they often effortlessly grow, share their healing gifts, shine and work their abundant light regardless of the strife their journey may bring, I end up with this question swirling around inside me:

How am I working my own light? (in Rebecca Campbell’s words)

Asking myself that question – How am I working my light? – inspires me to be true to what my wild essence calls me to. It reminds me of the choice I’ve made in how I want to live my life and what I want to offer.

Dr. John Demartini says that the quality of one’s life is determined by the quality of the questions that you ask yourself. I feel that he is right, because asking myself this sort of question helps me shed the imaginary shackles in my mind and brings me back to what is important. It gives me a point of positive focus

When you need direction, clarity, or a bit of inspiration, it may be worth asking yourself the kinds of questions that cut through the bullshit and connect you with the guiding light of your inner wilderness. Even when the answers a simple ones only allowing you to take small steps forwards not fully knowing what lies ahead, in my experience that light bit of guiding light help me to create a sense of harmony within myself and move from one stepping stone to the next with peace of mind.

Could You be a Sign?

I grew up believing in signs.

My grandmother always prayed for them. My mom did too. And they believed that their prayers were answered – pictures falling off walls, birds in the kitchen and dreams revealing a way forward. So, when I read The Alchemist in my late teens, it reinforced a beautiful reality that I’d seen in action in little ways. It opened my mind to a Universe that I’d caught small glimpses of here and there, an abundant Universe alive with magic, weaving blessings and love into our lives, a Universe that is guiding us to a greater good when we are open to receiving what it has to offer.

I’ve been asking for signs in recent weeks. I’ve needed guidance for clarity and direction. As I try to remain as open and receptive as I can, they’ve slowly been coming to me. Coincidences, messages from the Earth, passages I read in books and guidance from my oracle cards.  And this week, the signs I’ve ask for have come from kind people in the most unexpected ways, people who I am sure are completely unaware as to how much their presence or random messages have touched my life.

Sometimes a feather is a sign…and sometimes we are signs to people. Yes, sometimes you are the message of hope they’ve been waiting for, or perhaps they are that sign to you.

I feel this is especially true when you are connected to your wild essence, because being in touch with your inner spirit allows you become a vessel of grace. Being centred in truth, light, inner peace and wild grace is a gateway into the energetic network of the Universe. And so we carry that vibration of love, of hope and of inspiration through our words, our actions and even just our presence. We become their signs. We become their angels on Earth. We become the breadcrumbs that lead them back to clarity and hopefulness. Back to wholeness. Back to God(dess).

Thank you, dear guiding lights whose love and wisdom have healed my heart. I am so grateful. I hope that in some small way, I can be a guiding light and humble sign to you too.
