Half the Waning Moon

Half the Waning Moon

The night air filled me

As I looked up to see the half-eaten moon

Resting so still against the starry sky

She was not mourning her wounds

Or grappling for parts of herself not there

Instead, she sat at peace with her journey

Trusting that even though the night keeps eating away at her,

And her body dissolves and disappears until she is no more

Soon enough she will be reborn

And become whole again.

In the morning,

She smiled in a gentle blue heaven

Tinted in Beltane’s light

I drew her face into my body

And she whispered:

‘Are you ready to let go and then start all over again?’

Everything in me shouted ‘YES!’

A Whale Song Meditation

A few months ago, my parents retired and moved back to the coast, a place we’ve all always loved. When I was chatting to my mom yesterday, she mentioned that she’d spotted five whales out on the water. They passing through the area. How incredible! It made me really miss living by the sea and getting to spot these beautiful angels of the ocean. Thinking about whales reminded me of the short Whale Song Meditation I wrote a for the Healing Moments e-book a while ago. Earlier today, I spent a little time doing the meditation to connect with whale energy. I’ve tweaked the original meditation a bit and thought I’d share it with you here today.

  Whale Song Meditation

Close your eyes and relax, breathing in and out slowly. Imagine that you are floating in the middle of the ocean. Your ears are submerged in the water and you hear a sound in the distance. As it draws closer and closer, you realise that this is the song of the whales.

The vibration of this whale song travels through the water. When it reaches you, feel it resonating in your heart centre. The sound vibration of the whale song shatters any lower energy around your heart and opens your channels of Divine love. Old stagnant emotions are released and deep compassion fills you.

Breathe in and out slowly. Be present with the feeling of love and compassion. How can you be more compassionate towards yourself? Where can you be more compassionate with others? Listen to what the intuition of your wild inner essence tells you.

When you are ready, bring your attention back to your body and  open your eyes. Carry this intuitive wisdom and compassion with you into your day.

When the Rain Came

The air smelled of clouds and dust. Then the rain came. First, in spurts of light afternoon showers and then thunder showers are night.

I did what I love to do most. I sat by the window and watched it fall, and my writing flowed better than it has in a while. For the first time in weeks, the breeze was a cool cloak of comfort and rain drops fell through the open window and splattered on my back. The parts of me that had been parched and bare from the desert wave began to drink in the rain’s medicine. It’s as if I’ve had a pen full of dry powder and sand, unable to turn words out onto paper. Now, rain has fallen and turned the sand into ink, so that finally my hand can flow. It’s somewhat of an alchemical phenomenon, because it seems to turn the lead of my creative soul into inspired fluid gold.

I’ve never imagined myself as a river, but perhaps in some way, that is what I am, because these showers have made me feel like a river that is flowing again. I can see more clearly now why some women have written of finding the river within. Clarissa Pinkola Estes speaks of the Rio Abajo Rio, the river beneath the river, when she described the wild soul or creative instinctual life force carried with the feminine psyche. Abby Seixas spoke of it in Finding the Deep River Within too, where she wrote: “When I drop down or go inside, I often have the image of an underground river that is always there, always flowing through me, from a source beyond me, carrying deeply nourishing, life-giving qualities.”

This must be what the watery magic imbued rain awakens within me, drawing fragments of my feminine psyche to the surface so that I become aware of my underground river filling, my creative resources flowing and my wild essence unfurling.

How do you connect with your rio abajo rio? Do the elements and whispers of the Earth ever stir something in this deep and mysterious place?
