Riding the Desert Wave

It feels like I’m living in a desert space lately. Hot. Dry. Dusty wind. A lot like the semi-desert parts of the Western Cape that I visited last December.

Week of a lingering heat wave…the rains should have come by now. Alas, still none in sight so I’ve had to find other ways hydrate my inner essence its soul soothing absence – swimming, jars of cold water with bits of lemon and strawberries and walks down to the river.

I can’t concentrate. This unrelenting heat has lulled me into a state of estivation. I’ve been hiding out indoors, where it is cool and the white sheer curtains dance in airy rhythms when the breeze flows in. Writing is slow, and I’ve shifted my attention to reading, researching and planning instead, so that I’m not completely idle. I keep wondering – if it’s this hot and dry in spring, then what does summer hold?

Mary Reynolds Thompson says that desert landscapes teach us about simplicity, clarity and emptiness. I can see how, because while I’m not in an actual desert, this extreme heat has got me shedding so many unnecessary layers. Layers of blankets and clothes, clutter in my home and all the unnecessary things and draining activities that zap my energy. I’m getting clear on what truly matters and right now what I need is cool uncluttered airy spaciousness to soothe my soul and fuel my work and creativity.

One thing I have been grateful for is that the heat has made it easier for me to serve my body  and work toward my goal of vibrant health. Simple healthful meals, smoothies, fruit, salads, lots of water…I’m feeling lighter and happy that I’m honouring my commitment to my body.

Tea Crafting: Making Third Eye Chakra Tea

I am a tea enthusiast and for several years now, tea meditation has been an important part of my daily spiritual practice. As I wrote in an old blog post, I love the variety, exotic aromas and adventure that every new flavour and type of tea brings. I love that it can be healing, soothing or energising depending on what you need. But most importantly, it offers me an opportunity to be present, mindful and deeply attuned to the flow of the Universe.

When I took the leap into the unknown and followed my soul’s calling to deepen my study of/ relationship with the energy and spiritual wisdom of the Nature, I began a journey of constantly seeking out ways to tuned into, understand and share profound lessons or insights from the wild Earth, as well as the messages Spirit/Goddess shares through the natural world.

Keeping an herbal garden over the last 3 years has thus been an integral part of this personal deep study of the Earth and forging a stronger connection with Goddess. So, I’ve planted seeds/saplings and have been tending to, nurturing and communing with them as they’ve grown. In return, these delicate plant lightworkers offer me their wisdom, their medicine and both physical and spiritual healing.

As soon as the first signs of spring set in a few weeks ago, shades of lavender and violet herbal flowers blossomed everywhere. Enchanted by the vibration of these violet ray flowers, I felt called to work with them in some way. The idea of crafting a third eye chakra tea came to mind immediately. I allowed myself to be guided by intuition and the energies of the garden throughout the tea crafting process, keeping the intention of what I wanted to use the tea for in my heart. Slowly, I began picking the herbal flowers – borage, sage and lavender – and placing them on a sunny windowsill amongst amethyst crystals to dry. All these herbal flowers are known for their calming and spiritually related properties and amethyst is great for stimulating the third eye and crown chakras.

The flowers were picked early on warm sunny mornings. I used both fresh lavender flowers from my garden, and some sprigs of the dried bunch of lavender I picked when I visited my grandmother in August. I like the idea of having included bits of flowers tended by her hand and touched by her years of wisdom. For this particular tea, I didn’t use any herbal leaves, just the flowers. I usually mix the herbs and flowers together with some black tea, but again, this time round, I decided to only work with the flowers. Flower medicine is both subtle and powerful, and I imagine that their vibrant healing qualities would be most potent in spring because that is where the plant directs all its energy towards.

The next step was to do a tea blessing. I set the tea together with the amethyst crystals out under the light of the full blood moon to be anointed with mystical moon Goddess vibes. Keeping the intention of creating a third eye chakra tea to calm my mind, clear my brow chakra, enhance intuition and stimulate good sleep and dreams, I imbued it with healing white light. And so the tea was made.

I often use Margaret Roberts’s Herbal Teas as a loose guide when it comes to tea crafting. It’s important to know your herbs and use reputable references, and be especially cautious when you are pregnant because most herbs are off limits then. That said, while knowledge of herbs and their properties is important, just the same as when I make the space clearing sage smudge spray, I feel that holding specific positive intentions, working with etheric earth and plant energies, Goddess and white light are all equally important steps in my process.

I’ll be drinking it in the evenings for the next month and paying attention to how my subtle bodies respond to it (especially around the new moon). I’ve added some cloves and cardamoms seeds for a bit of flavour, and sometimes have the tea with a slice of zesty lemon. I’m excited to see how things unfold.

Have you ever made any herbal or flower teas? Have you worked with tea to clear or stimulate your chakras? What was you experience life?

A Lavender Kissed Sky

Are you still basking in the afterglow of the Blood Moon’s magic?

The full moon was a quiet and peaceful one for me. I spent time under the stars, journaling by candle light as the moon rose across the sky. I said prayers to release the things that keep me stuck in situations that I’m ready to move on from. Mostly, I just enjoyed being bathed in the moonlight with my heart in conversation with Goddess.

So I didn’t expect to wake up to a morning where I felt stuck, frustrated and where things were just not flowing as I’d hoped. When I couldn’t get passed the invisible brick wall in my path, I took time out to get some sun, swim and read Mary Oliver at the poolside.

There was a strangely mysterious moment when I breathed, released my mucky thoughts and surrendered my body to float freely in the water. I looked up to see that the sky was an unusual shade of lavender, something I’ve never seen before. To be sure that I wasn’t imagining, I pointed it out to my husband. He too was amazed to see a lavender kissed sky. It was a rear treat, and to me, it was a moment of unexpected magic. I wish I’d taken a picture, but by the time I’d finished swimming the sky had returned to its normal bright spring blue. I wondered if it was a sign from the Universe, a signal to look at things from a different perspective, to look at things through the eyes of wonder and awe? Given what I’d been feeling, that would be an apt message.

After the swim and some breathing space, I felt my heart resting in inner peace. It was clear that the fluid vibration of water and a little time to play were just what I needed to shift things back to a space of inspired grace and clarity. I was reminded of the power of play and how making space for it during stressful moments can take you out of stuckness and reinvigorate your wild creative juices.

I returned to my writing desk with a lightness and the magic of the lavender sky stirring wild stories within. The second half of my day has flowed with greater ease, focus and productivity. There are a number of things I am working on behind the scenes – a guest blogging series, new meditations to offer you, an e-course and a short e-book series. I’m slowly getting started on book number 2 as well. All are quite exciting, but of course require a lot of work and a very balanced schedule. Some days I feel pulled in so many different directions. Today’s lesson reminded me that those overwhelming or frustratingly stagnant moments are the best time to disconnect, have a change of scene and shift into a more light-hearted space so that I renew my energy, tap into the flow and am able to return to my tasks with a fresh mind.

What are you learning right now? What soul lesson is the Universe teaching you?
